Looking for assistance. I would like to make changes to the variant coding of a W176 A Class to allow apple car play.
I can access the comand using HU5S1.cbf, however, changes I make to the variant coding revert back to their original values.
I'm guessing I don't have authority to change the coding, but when I go to request a seed key, by entering in 27 0B, I do not get a seed key request.
Can anyone advise where I am going wrong?

To activate Apple CarPlay on a Mercedes W176 with Vediamo, you need to open the HU5S1.cbf file using Vediamo software. Then, locate and adjust three specific settings as described: enable CarPlay under VCD_Driver_Distraction, turn on Remote UI under VCD_RUI_Settings, and activate several settings under VCD_Remote_UI_Applications, including Automotive Link via USB and CarPlay via USB. Finally, navigate to the function group on the left side and double-click on FN_Hardreset to complete the process.

Hi, no seedkey is needed. If the coding is not successful it may be necessary to update the software.

You can activate it very easy using [ Log in or register now to view this content ].
If software old, program will give you new software for flashing.
If you want do it yourself, at the first give VIN then HW and SW number from head unit.

Hello. If it’s any help I had a w176 with a HU5S1 head unit with the code 805. CarPlay officially came in with the 806 cars. With the latest software installed it wouldn’t switch on the CarPlay either with one of the goggles you can buy or via Vediamo. If you switched it on it would turn itself back off after a hard reset. I think the HU5S1 software was blocking it as the 805 code was stored in the EZS. It’s just something to be aware of if the latest software was installed.

Did you try to find similar code in EZS and see if you can replace it somehow?

I didn’t no. I upgraded to comand so it had CarPlay installed.

I have W176 with sw153010 and I used the Aliexpress OBD active tool to activate Carplay which only costs 8 EUR.

I got one from them and it didn’t work. Going into the engineering mode and turning it on manually also didn’t work. When the hard reset was done it turned itself back off. I didn’t have the software to downgrade the head unit at the time otherwise I would have done that. It was a bit annoying at the time. I still have the head unit so I might try it when I get time.

I own a W176 that was originally equipped with an NTG 5.1 Audio 20 head unit. To activate CarPlay, I bought an OBD2 dongle on eBay, followed the instructions and activated CarPlay.
Later, I decided to retrofit Comand NTG 5.1 with a larger screen. This work was carried out by a retrofit specialist here in Greece.
However, I'm a little confused by the engineering menu in the Comand compared to Audio 20. They seem completely different, and the Audio 20 information displayed in engineering mode was much more detailed.
Is this the same with your setup?
