As the question suggests, ODIS-S does not recognize the vehicle's ignition status when using Launch SmartLink C as a J2534 Passthru device. I updated the J2534 drivers for SmartLink using the original Launch software for J2534 Passthru device drivers.

This does not allow me to activate anything or use any functions in ODIS other than reading fault codes, freeze frame data and clearing fault codes. Does anyone have a solution to this problem other than buying a VAS6154A or VCDS HEX-NET adapter?

Passthru J2534 does not allow to detect ignition automatically/manually by default/design.
The only device that does it MANUALLY (i.e. you need to tick the box if ignition is on/off) is Scanmatik 2 PRO, the driver for this device supports ODIS Service 23.0.1 and Engineering 17.0.1 (not newer than this) as of today (driver 2.21.26).
The issue you describe where ODIS does not recognize ignition status is a known limitation when using some J2534 Passthru devices. Unfortunately, Launch SmartLink C does not fully support all ODIS features as it primarily focuses on reading and clearing DTCs rather than advanced diagnostic or activation features.

You may want to try the following steps:

Double check if there are any firmware updates for the SmartLink C device itself, as sometimes updates can improve compatibility.
Consider using alternative J2534 drivers if available, as different driver versions can sometimes affect ODIS functionality.

If these steps unfortunately do not work, the best solution may be to purchase a VAS6154A or VCDS HEX-NET adapter, as they are more compatible with the full range of ODIS functions.

Also, could you please let us know what car model you are trying this on? Sometimes ODIS functionality can be limited depending on the car model, especially with Passthru devices.

This is a Skoda Octavia MK2 Facelift (IZ3). I also tried it on a 2019 Audi A6 Diesel V6.

Would a VAS6154A clone from VXDAS or a Tactrix Openport 2.0 Genuine help here? I'll be getting them in December, something that will help with full functionality is what I'm looking for at an affordable price.

I would like to be able to use SmartLink itself since I already have it.

So Tactrix Openport 2.0 doesn't support it, right?
Scanmatik 2 PRO costs around 450 USD which is out of my budget at the moment.
Then is it better to take a clone of VAS6154A?

Tactrix Openport 2.0 does not support ignition status. VAS6154A clone is better suited for this job.

This problem happened to me. The solution was to buy a new tool with a better chip, because J2534 is not very compatible with ODIS.

The J2534 protocol does not support displaying the ignition status.

In my shop usually use SM2 original, tested on ODIS 24.12, works well, even when connected to the network there are no problems. With clone VAS6154, tested in the last 2 days, it is based on VXDIAG firmware, so it is better to buy VXDIAG.

Buy the red VNCI 6154A, it's cheap and easy to use.
