I would like to share my experience on how I managed to add CarPlay/Android Auto to the OEM screen.
After much research and checking all available options, I now have CarPlay with the OEM screen.
First, I had to buy a new head unit with CarPlay support (NTG 5.2 and above).
Before purchasing, make sure the wiring on the donor head unit matches the wiring on the factory unit installed in your car.
Then you will have to replace the original card reader with one that has a phone symbol on USB port 2. Make sure your car's wiring is purple and white, otherwise you will need an adapter.
Then, if a donor head unit is used, you will need the anti-theft code to unlock the new head unit for your car.
After this, coding will be required to ensure that all of your car's functions work properly with the new head unit, and if your new head unit does not have CarPlay activated, coding will be required to enable CarPlay.
In terms of cost:
Used donor head: £200
Used card reader: £90
Anti-theft code, head unit coding and CarPlay activation: £250
More expensive than just replacing the OEM screen with an Android one, but in my opinion, it's a much better option.
