What software do I need to use to update the engine and gearbox of my facelift W203? Are there any articles or guides on this topic that you could recommend?

This can be done with a DAS offline programming or Vediamo, but DAS is easier if you can customize it.

What model and year is your W203, petrol or diesel? I also had a W203 facelift and my mechanic updated the software too, but since I sold it I can't check which version is updated. Why do you want to do this? Is it to fix something or just to be on the latest version?

I have a W203 C180 Kompressor 2008, just wish I had the latest version assuming it would improve fuel economy.

I don't think it will improve fuel economy or it will be minimal, but you can try. Be very careful if you do it yourself. I'm new to this, still learning how to hook up my car and diagnose problems. But I'm hesitant to upgrade anything myself.

What is the benefit of this update?

I doubt Mercedes actively updates the ECU firmware, perhaps to fix minor issues rather than a complete re-tuning to improve power and fuel economy.

W203 is a simple DAS car, you can flash it in DAS, of course, you will need cr@ck for offline programming first, then you will need SDFlash files, you can find them in the forum. I recommend using an old version, the best is "Golden Version", and you can flash your car, of course, you will need a good battery charger. Also in Vediamo, I worked with this program for a long time, you will have difficulties. By the way, all variant codings will be lost, so you can make a new coding after flashing.

Did you do this update? I don't think it will help with MPG... It may reduce emissions, but I don't believe it does.

You can update, but I don't think it will improve MPG. Updates mostly fix things like warnings and DTC behavior. It is possible that an update will increase things like EGR frequency, and I'm sure you don't want that to happen.
But an EGS53 (Pearbox) update can improve shift quality. But if your transmission starts shifting poorly, you need to flush it or repair it.
New software won't fix anything wrong. You can make an adaptation.
