As the question suggests, ODIS-S does not recognize the vehicle's ignition status when using Launch SmartLink C as a J2534 Passthru device. I updated the J2534 drivers for SmartLink using the original Launch software for J2534 Passthru device drivers.

This does not allow me to activate anything or use any functions in ODIS other than reading fault codes, freeze frame data and clearing fault codes. Does anyone have a solution to this problem other than buying a VAS6154A or VCDS HEX-NET adapter?

Passthru J2534 does not allow to detect ignition automatically/manually by default/design.
The only device that does it MANUALLY (i.e. you need to tick the box if ignition is on/off) is Scanmatik 2 PRO, the driver for this device supports ODIS Service 23.0.1 and Engineering 17.0.1 (not newer than this) as of today (driver 2.21.26).
VCX SE works well with ODIS (ignition status works). It can be used for VAG and it supports other brands that will be added in the future. If it matters, when I had problems with Xentry (Mercedes software) they helped me figure it out by contacting them on WhatsApp (big plus on my part).

You also have another option, TOPDON RLink J2534, I have it and use it on Xentry, except for manual ignition switching, everything works as it should.
