I am asking what OBD diagnostic interface can be used with a 2005 W639 van.
I have already found out that the standard OBD CAN diagnostic interface can be used for this van, which has proven itself to be very good.
Since I want to update my system, I want to ask if it is possible to diagnose this van with a J2534 scanner?
I often read about the J2534 scanner that it only supports vehicles manufactured since 2006.
Has anyone done anything like this before?
If the diagnostics work with the J2534 scanner I think it will be a good investment for future use on new vehicles.

I used XENTRY PassThru and OpenShell, I read data from R230 SL500, released in 2002, using PassThru program and Tactrix Openport 2.0 interface. I was able to connect to the car and also read data, but many functions were limited.

Then I read the data from the same car using the OpenShell program and the SDconnect C4 interface, all functions worked.

I was also able to read data from a W164 2006 ML280 without any problems using PassThru. I have reviewed several vehicles with both interfaces as well as XENTRY PassThru and OpenShell and can only recommend OpenShell with SDconnect C4 as this device offers much more.
I think the VCX SE device for Mercedes-Benz supports 2005 model year vehicles.

The Foxwell NT530 scanner with the Mercedes software package works great and is inexpensive.

I tried this with Openport 2.0 interface and XENTRY 12.23 PassThru version, but it didn't work. Automatic vehicle detection failed and manual selection of vehicle characteristics (model number, VIN, configuration number, etc.) did not work. I tested it on a 2008 Vito W639 and the interface and software worked. I'm still trying to figure out how to use XENTRY PassThru with Mercedes W639 2005.

XENTRY PassThru J2534 + Scanmatik 2 work great!

Anything with Passthru will work on Mercedes-Benz from 2005 onwards with full CAN. For older cars it is better to use Star Diagnosis, for example C4 or C5.

I am quite happy with the Tactrix Openport 2.0 from AliExpress. These older models require DAS which works fine with the "Ignition Enabler" and modified INI files.
