How are things going with EGR removal, is deprogramming enough or do I need to completely close the channel as in the photo? Thank you.

It is better to close it. It is simpler and more reliable. The tube can burn out, the valve is more difficult to remove and there is no need to think that there may be leaks in the valve. But to check it is enough to fill in the calibrated firmware.
