Hello, here is a guided diagnostic for the DTC516F68:
STEP 1 - PRIORITY IN PROCESSING IN CASE OF ACCUMULATION OF DTC
Prioritize the treatment of the following faults, if they are present or stored:
DTC 50C549
DTC F00316
DTC F00317
DTC F0031C
DTC 517577
Check DTCs for: PARKING BRAKE
Among the DTCs mentioned, are any present or stored?
>YES
Access the corresponding diagnostic methods, using the diagnostic tool interface.
>NO
Take the next step. Step 2 - Visually check the emergency release control

STEP 2 - VISUALLY CHECK THE EMERGENCY RELEASE CONTROL
NOTE
This fault indicates that the assisted parking brake system has been released by the emergency unlocking control (if this is the case, check that the handle protector is not damaged).
The cables are reset when manually releasing the parking brake or automatically (if the fault is present) when driving at more than 2 km/h (the fault becomes memorized).
Check the assembly and condition of the emergency release control. Proceed to repair. (parking brake control)
Is the emergency unlocking control correctly positioned?
>YES
Take the next step. Step 3 - Check the DTC recording context
>NO
Return the emergency release control to conformity. Proceed to repair. (parking brake control)

STEP 3 - CHECK DTC RECORDING CONTEXT
NOTE
This check must be carried out on horizontal ground.
Using the parking brake application control, apply it and note the application value and compare it with the application value recorded by the assisted parking brake computer.
Apply the parking brake. Activate AC002 APPLICATION (PARKING BRAKE)
Read the tightening setpoint value.
PARKING BRAKE PR005 EFFORT SETTING (Value)

Compare the setpoint value with the value recorded by the parking brake computer.
PARKING BRAKE PR004 MEASURED VALUE OF EFFORT (Value)

Do the setpoint and tightening values match?
>YES
This body is compliant. Continue
>NO
Take the next step. Step 4 - Check the condition and conformity of the parking brake cables

STEP 4 - CHECK THE CONDITION AND CONFORMITY OF THE PARKING BRAKE CABLES
Check the assembly and condition of the parking brake cables. Proceed to repair. (primary parking brake cable)
Are the power park brake cables compliant?
>YES
Take the next step. Step 5 - Check the condition and conformity of the rear brake calipers
>NO
Replace the parking brake cables in compliance. Proceed to repair. (primary parking brake cable)

STEP 5 - CHECK THE CONDITION AND CONFORMITY OF THE REAR BRAKE CALIPERS
Check the assembly and condition of the rear brake calipers. Proceed to repair. (front brake caliper assembly)
Are the calipers compliant?
>YES
Take the next step. Step 6 - Check the condition and conformity of the rear brake pads
>NO
Bring the brake calipers back into compliance. Proceed to repair. (front brake caliper assembly)

STEP 6 - CHECK THE CONDITION AND CONFORMITY OF THE REAR BRAKE PADS
Check the assembly and condition of the rear brake pads. Proceed to repair. (front brake pad)
Are the pads compliant?
>YES
Take the next step. Step 7 - Perform a loosening and tightening command
>NO
Bring the pads back into compliance. Proceed to repair. (front brake pad)

STEP 7 - PERFORM A LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING COMMAND
Perform a release and tightening command using the manual control in order to re-engage the brake cables.
Check DTCs for: PARKING BRAKE
Is DTC still present?
>YES
Escalate the problem to the next level of expertise. (SEE, Escalation procedure - generic)
>NO
Continue

After carrying out the checks, also check at the harness socket on the parking brake computer if there is no broken wire because I already had this problem on Laguna III.

Hi Christiano,

I have tried :
Apply the parking brake. Activate AC002 APPLICATION (PARKING BRAKE).
Read the tightening setpoint value.

But when i click on APPLY or RELEASE but nothing happens, NO release or apply, NO motor noise winding at all, only when i use the HAND BRAKE BUTTON with flashing red light.

Hi,

Replacing will be expensive, so i figured out it is either, the motor is at fault,
(but saying that i hear the wind of the motor in the EPB when i use the electronic brake switch to engage and disengage the brakes, just does not lock the brakes).

I am sure it is something simple but can not figure it out.

After some stress and research, I finally managed to fix my Renault Laguna 3 Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).

It turned out the reason I get the "DTC516F68- EMERGENCY RELEASE" was because the BRAKE PADS were completely WORN to the bare metal, not allowing
the Brake cable and Caliper to tighten enough to lock the brakes, when the Electronic handbrake leaver was pulled inside the car.

I did manage to change the MOTOR inside the EPB unit as it needed it, even though that was not the main reason for the "fault".

So here is some advise for you folks reading this who have or will encounter this kind of issues in the future.

If you encounter problems like "APPLY PARKING BRAKE" and "PARKING BRAKE FAULT" then here are some things to look into first before anything else.

If your Renault gives a message of "PARKING BRAKE FAULT" and the brakes do not ENGAGE, then Check this:

1. Are your Brake Pads worn down to the minimum?

2. Is the Caliper on the brake piston springy or stuck?

3. Has the cable on the EPB snapped?

So Check this first:

Check that the parking brake mechanical tensioning line is correct:
– that the parking brake cables are fitted correctly (refer to the repair procedure).
– that the parking brake cables are in good condition (not seized or deteriorated).
– that the rear brake calipers are correct, in good condition and operating correctly.
– that the rear brake pads are correct and in good condition.
Carry out the necessary repairs.

In my case it was excessive WORN brake pads that gave the DF046 - EMERGENCY RELEASE because there was not enough GRIP for the EPB cables to cling on to.

Also note if you get many error codes it does not mean every part in your car is faulty, since most components rely on the readings of its counter parts.
Once the main faulty part is resolved all other codes correct itself during a reset.

Also another Tip I can offer is if your Electronic brake is jammed closed or lock onto the discs and the car won't move and you pull the emergency cord on the EPB unit but does not pull or feels stuck, THEN UN-SCREW THE CIRCULAR CONNECTOR WERE THE CABLES ENTER THE UNIT next to the Emergency release cable and then pull it again, it will release.

A big SHOUT OUT TO "Blue Chip Autotronics" based in Wales for there help and useful advice.

I will leave you with some fault codes and what they relate too (a diagnostic Tool is NEEDED).

I have just 1 final problem, the right drivers side rear wheel does not lock the wheel when EPB is engaged.
The passengers side is wheel locks and is working very good, since this would be a M.O.T. FAILURE, I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO?

Now I have solved this problem, I just need a new caliper.
